Locked

I kept my heart locked, but not for the reasons that many think

I kept it lock so the right key may open it someday.

Gates

Open the gates and you’ll see me waiting

I’m just here.

Too long you’ve kept yourself away

Too long you’ve locked yourself in

Too long you’ve doubted yourself.

It’s time to open up and let yourself free

Open the gates and take my hand.

I Tossed My Heart Out That Day

It was locked,

Stowed away,

Under lock and key and strict supervision.
It had been a while since it last came out

Careful handling is needed
But when I saw you, I then felt it

A thump

A jump

A humming
And it was then that I threw it all away

All My Secrets

If I tell you in a whisper

If I say the words slow

If I say it all at once

I know you’ll keep them locked

You have my trust

I know you will

You will keep it all

I Never Gave A Lock of Hair

I never gave a lock of hair away
To a man, Dearest, except this to thee,
Which now upon my fingers thoughtfully,
I ring out to the full brown length and say
‘Take it.’ My day of youth went yesterday;
My hair no longer bounds to my foot’s glee,
Nor plant I it from rose or myrtle-tree,

As girls do, any more: it only may
Now shade on two pale cheeks the mark of tears,
Taught drooping from the head that hangs aside
Through sorrow’s trick. I thought the funeral-shears
Would take this first, but Love is justified,—
Take it thou,—finding pure, from all those years,
The kiss my mother left here when she died.
