Hello earthlings! It’s been a while since I’ve written a Visayan poetry. I live in Cebu Philippines and our language here is Bisaya. We call poetry as Balak.

Balak is mainly old Visayan language which is quite deep and not commonly used nowadays. I’ve posted a few on this blog over the years but have not done one recently. I tried squeezing my creative juices on this.

There is a translation after and no, this is not based on Google translate so I hope it makes sense and I do it justice.

Wala nimo mabatyagi ang pagbati ko kanimo

Wala man lang nimo gitagad bisan akong anino

Siguro kay wala kay gibati para kanako

O siguro, ingon ana lang gyud ka, ka manhid undo.

You didn’t even notice my feelings for you

Not even my shadow, no you didn’t notice that too

Maybe because you don’t have feelings to give

Boy, you’re just insensitive.

Kasing-kasing (Heart)

Been a while since I’ve written Visayan poetry or Balak. Here’s something I came up with.

————————————-

Kasing-kasing ko nag pitik

Pitik, pitik, pitik

Gikulbaan

Gikuyawan

Unsa jud ning gipamati?

.

Ulo ko nag labad

Sakit, sakit, sakit

Napasmohan

Nagutman

Wala kasabot sa gibati.

.

Kasing-kasing nag pitik

Ulo nag sakit

Mata ko gisuwawan

Gihayagan ug taman

Sa kaanyag mo.

Translation:

My heart is beating fast

Thump, thump, thump

Nervous

Scared

What is this feeling?

.

My head, aches

Aching, aching, aching

Loss of appetite

Not wanting to eat

I don’t understand what I’m feeling.

.

My heart is fastly beating

My head is aching

My eyes can hardly see

Because your beauty shines brightly.

Akong Dagway (My Face)

Imong dagway ang ako makita

Inig piyong ug buka niining akong mga mata.

Sa damgo ug sa pagmata

Ikaw pirmi ang gipangita.

Hinaot imong masayran

Ang pagbati nga di kabayran.

Ug hinaot ang akong dagway

Mao sad ang imong pangitaon kanunay.

————————

Your face is what I see

When these eyes are closed as well as when they are open.

In dreams and upon waking

I look only for you.

I’m hoping you would know

This unfathomable love.

And that it is my face

That you seek for all the time.

Adlawng Natawhan (Birthday)

Sa imong adlawng natawhan
Gi ampo nako nga ikaw mabulahan
Nga hinaot, ikaw malipayon o inahan.
Salamat sa imong pag atiman
Ug pag amuma kanamong tanan.
Gipangga ka namo todo-todo, inahan!
Malipayong adlawng natawhan.

On your birthday

Blessings is what I pray

Hoping you are happy, oh mother dear.

Thank you for taking good care of us

And for loving us.

We love you so much, mother!

Have a happy birthday.

Mabugnaw Nga Buntag (Cold Morning)

Ang kabugnawon sa buntag

Maoy mi sugat kanako.

Ang kaalimuot giwagtang

Sa bugnaw nga ni gakos sa ako.

Ang habol, ang unlan, mao ang gigamit sa pagtago

Akong kalipay nga matulog ug dugay-dugay, kutob langit sangko.

The cold morning

Greeted me.

It washed away the humidity

As it embraced me.

The blankets, the pillows, I use as my shield

As I happily sleep longer under the covers that I built.

Adlaw (Days)

Mga adlawng nilabay / Days gone

Mga adlawng lumalabay / Days to come

Hain na? / Where has it gone?

Nganong ka dali ba? / Suddenly all done?

Nitunga, nawala, ni agi / It came, disappeared, went by

Murag imong gibati, ako ang alaot niini / Like your fleeting feelings, I’m the one left to cry

Pero mao na jud na / But that’s that

Mga adlawng nawala / Days gone just like that
