Where have they gone?
What have we done?
It’s been years since I’ve seen one
Dragons that roamed so freely before
The meadows and fields they used to explore
They’re now nearly gone, extinct, no more
Fireflies that lit up the night
So many they were, they shined bright
Nowadays, not one is insight
Fireflies and dragonflies seem like myths now
But I do hope they re-emerge, somehow
To see again the dragon’s wings and the fireflies’ light
That would be such a delight
This is related to the yesterday’s post. I got inspired by the chirping birds that greet me every morning and was planning to write something about their song. I was also thinking how cool it would be, to be able to fly away with them and not be afraid of this pandemic. So I came up with this rhyme.
Take me with you, let me fly
Let my playground be the sky
Let me soar over hills and seas
Play with the butterflies and the bees
Let me have wings like that of yours
To reach the safety of the shores
And on the fields and gardens green
Is where we will rest for the air is clean
I hear the chirping of the birds as I wake up
They’re the sounds of the morning.
Pleasing to the ears and a good way to start the day.
I love hearing them sing.
I don’t miss waking up early to get to work
But I miss going to work and seeing workmates who are now like family.
I don’t miss the traffic and the time spent confined in a jeepney for many hours just to get home
But I miss being able to go out anywhere at almost any time.
I don’t miss the over crowded places
But I miss the crowd of friends and families getting together.
I definitely don’t miss the pollution and would prefer going out to inhale a fresher air.
That was the old world,
Just some months ago.
No crickets serenading
No dogs howling
Even the clouds seem to be still.
The moon left the sky, leaving it bare
The stars don’t sparkle as much
They’re not dancing tonight.
No cats meowing
No frogs croaking
The night is still.
Never has the summer been
As hot as it is now,
If you go out it’ll hurt your skin
It might even scorch your brow.
Heat index at 50 degrees
That’s Celsius and not Fahrenheit,
But still wouldn’t you agree
That, that is hot alright!
Can’t get to the beach to cool off
Or to the mall for some cold air,
If only we could get out, just blastoff
And feel the wind in our hair.
I fix instead some cold drink
One glass, then two, then three
This will do for now, I think
Until again the heat makes me thirsty.
Mama used her younger years raising her kids
She woke up early and slept late
When she got sick, she took care of herself.
She somehow always kept the house clean, despite three children growing almost at the same time
When she found time, she sang
And she had such a beautiful voice
I loved how mama sang.
Mama is older now
Her confidence sometimes falters
So I remind her of her strength and how much I admire her.
She gets tired easily now
So I try to let her rest as much as possible.
Mama still has a lot of her funny side though
And for that, I am always thankful for.

I dragged my feet as I walked out the bedroom
Eyes, sleepy and sagging…still wanting more sleep
I managed to take a shower, getting ready to work from home
Still I was feeling sleepy
Oh woe is me!
Finally after an hour or two, I decided I badly need one
So, a cup of coffee I drank and my day finally began
